WHAT CAUSES ANXIETY IN CHILDREN


Some children are born with anxiety issues and are not able to handle stress, as well as other

children they pick up on or sense anxious behavioral from being around people that are anxious. Children that are exposed to stressful situations developed anxiety from certain events, for example, frequent moving between homes, schools and separation from family.


CHILD ANXIETY


Children, like adults, get anxious. It's a normal occurrence for them to be afraid If a child's anxiety starts to affect their wellbeing and causes a lot of stress, they may need help to manage it. Anxiety can also be a learned behaviour, growing up in an environment where people are always anxious and fearful can teach children to be afraid.


SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY IN CHILDREN


Some of the symptoms include:

  • Finding it hard to concentrate.

  • Not sleeping, or waking up at nights with bad dreams

  • Not eating properly.

  • Getting angry easily or irritable and being out of control during outbursts.

  • Constantly worrying or having negative complains of tummy aches and feeling unwell and clingy.


WHAT HELPS A CHILD'S ANXIETY


Some pointers to assist children to cope or escape. The cycle of anxiety

  • The goal is not to eliminate anxiety but to help to manage it.

  • Don't avoid situations because it causes the child to get anxious.

  • Express positive - and realistic expectations..

  • Respects their feelings, but don' t empower them in the situation.

  • Don't ask leading questions.

  • Don't reinforce the child's fears.

  • Encourage the child to tolerate their anxiety.

  • Try to model healthy ways of handling anxiety..
